Understanding Chest Pain: When Is It Serious?
Not all chest pain is a heart attack — but some is. Learn the warning signs and when to rush to hospital.
Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people visit an emergency room. While many causes are harmless, chest pain can also signal a heart attack — so it should never be ignored.
Common causes
- • Heart-related: angina, heart attack, or pericarditis.
- • Digestive: acidity, gastritis, or reflux.
- • Muscle or bone: strain, injury, or rib inflammation.
- • Lung-related: infection, clot, or pleurisy.
When it is an emergency
- • Crushing pain or pressure lasting more than a few minutes.
- • Pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck, or back.
- • Sweating, nausea, or severe breathlessness.
- • If you notice these, call 98422 09999 immediately.
